Writing for the Daily Mail, Emma Love said that blue is traditionally associated with the relaxing atmosphere of a bedroom or bathroom, but is versatile and luxurious enough to be turned into a statement colour elsewhere in the home.

Louise Smith, Dulux's colour and design manager, told Ms Love that peacock blue embodies both drama and sophistication, and has replaced the lighter, airier blues which were popular last year as the designer's hue of choice.

Ms Love suggested that those who are unsure of adding something as dramatic as a feature wall or prominent band of colour can add splashes of their chosen shade in the form of accessories and furnishings, which add to the sumptuous finish of a room.

Last week, Janet Eavenson of Leonard Provence Interiors advised homeowners to make their rooms more inviting over the festive period by adding fairy lights.
