Overall, the DIY sector is set to suffer this year as recent falls in house prices are likely to dissuade people from borrowing against their house in order to fund home improvements, according to Matthew Piner, retail analyst at Verdict Research, speaking at the Totally DIY show at the Birmingham NEC.

He said that, last year, gardening was very popular, as homeowners took advantage of the good weather over the summer.

Fitted kitchens also increased in popularity, said Mr Piner. He explained that, following the collapse of MFI, the "big DIY players were really quick to move in on that and it has been a huge area of growth for them".

Mr Piner's comments follow a report from Ratedpeople.com claiming that DIY expenditure is likely to fall this year because of the increasing number of people priced out of the property market.
