Angela Epstein, writing for the Daily Mail, said that most bleaches, mould and mildew cleaners contain sodium hypochlorite, which is highly corrosive and gives off toxic fumes, which can irritate the eyes, nose and throat.

She went on to say that the best way of using these substances is to ensure that the room has plenty of ventilation, while a face mask should also be worn.

"Using bleach and ammonia products in the same room is dangerous, as this combination can lead to the release of chlorine, a potentially fatal gas which attacks the throat and lungs," Ms Epstein added.

Advice on DIYDoctor.org.uk states that bathroom ceilings covered in mould have long been a source of concern for property owners.

It advised painting walls with steriliser to kill mould, painting a barrier to prevent re-growth and mixing fungicide additive with emulsion.
