Blane Judd, chief executive at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), said that homeowners should ask to see the fitter's Gas Safe registration before allowing them to carry out work on their property.

Mr Judd said: "It is not worth taking the risk that you are employing someone who is not registered ... For an extra safeguard, ask if they will check your carbon monoxide alarm or supply you with one if you don't have one installed."

He added that plumbing competence is also important if someone has to call a workman out to repair boiler problems.

The comments come as research from British Gas showed that 24 per cent of Britons have suffered a boiler malfunction in previous winters, and 68 per cent fail to prepare for problems in advance.
