Basement conversions 'superb way of creating space'

The Property Care Association (PCA) claims to have seen an increase in enquires regarding the conversion of basement space, which could result in a rise in the number of consumers looking for a quote from home improvement firms.

Yasmin Chopin, executive director of the PCA, said the creation of a new basement space can be a "rewarding and cost-effective investment".

She estimated the creation and conversion of basements in the UK has increased by 100 per cent in the last three years, adding the figure "might be even higher".

Ms Chopin stated: "Homeowners who are reluctant to move house in the current economic climate could look to a basement conversion as a superb way of creating more living space."

Recent data from Lloyds TSB found that £16.6 billion was spent on home improvement and maintenance during 2008 in the UK.
