Assess window sills to see if cheap double glazing should be installed

Assess window sills to see if cheap double glazing should be installedExamining an existing window's frame and sill is one of the first things to do when assessing if it needs to be replaced with cheap double glazing, Building Design magazine has suggested.People assessing whether their property requires new windows, such as cheap double glazing, should examine the condition of their current windows' frames and sills, a specialist architecture magazine has suggested.

Building Design also recommends having a look at the condition of the window's sash, including its rails, stiles and muntins as well as the condition of the paint around it.

Window deterioration can be caused by a number of factors, including poor design, moisture, vandalism, insects and lack of maintenance.

"Moisture is a primary cause of decay in wooden windows. Start by reviewing the lower portions of the frame and sash - exterior rainwater and interior condensation can flow downward along the window," the magazine advises.

Last month, Conservatory Outlet advised those replacing their windows to contact UPVC window suppliers as these frames are virtually maintenance free and can last longer than wooden frames.

UPVC frames are available in finishes designed to look like oak and rosewood.
