Kathy McCleary, writing for the Washington Herald, said that it is important not to impose an adult's taste onto a kid's space.

She explained that not only does designing their own bedroom decor allow children to express themselves creatively, but also allows parents to discover more about their offspring

Ms McCleary also warned against fads, saying: "Don't spend big money on trends. Only follow the trends if they work for you, your child's age and your home."

She added that accessories can be a good compromise, allowing you to add accents of this season's interior design key styles in a cheap and easily replaceable way.

For other areas of the house, the Daily Mail suggested earlier this week that velvet is an excellent addition to home decor during winter, due to its rich and opulent feel.
