Double glazing is to be fitted in every council house in Gateshead.Gateshead Council has agreed to fit double glazing in all council homes. The window replacement programme was approved by cabinet members at a recent council meeting.Almost £200 million has already been spent by the council and the Gateshead Housing Company on major improvements to more than 10,000 homes in the area. The improvements brought the properties up to the government's Decent Homes standard, which requires houses to be warm, weatherproof and have 'reasonably modern facilities'.Around 8,000 of the Gateshead homes that were improved received new double glazing, which will cut energy use and, therefore, utility bills and carbon dioxide emissions. The council said that double glazed windows, such as cheap UPVC windows, are popular with council house tenants as they reduce drafts and increase security. Councillor Angela Armstrong, cabinet member for housing, said: "Everyone knows about the substantial energy savings that can be derived by fitting double glazed windows, with major effects both on a tenant's fuel poverty and on Gateshead's carbon footprint."She added that the new windows will also help to reduce the council's on-going repair and maintenance costs.Written by Glenn Derbyshire.
