Naoimh Tuohy, who co-founded the company Interior Options in 2003, wrote on the website Herald.ie that houses should have as many double glazed windows as possible, especially as the evenings get darker and the weather gets colder.

The interior designer particularly recommended cheap UPVC roof windows for attic rooms.

"It never ceases to surprise me at just how much light they can bring into a room," she wrote.

She also added that people building patios on to their houses should make the outside decking level with the inside so that, when the patio doors are open, the back garden feels more like an extension of the home rather than a separate space.

Ms Tuohy has a background in the property market and, having previously worked in this industry, claims to possess an intuitive and extensive knowledge of the design needs of both landlords and tenants.
