6,000 Welsh homes to get energy-efficient improvementsThe Arbed scheme will see exterior wall insulation, solar panels and heat pumps being installed in homes across Wales.Thousands of homes in Wales are to get energy efficient improvements as part of a major new scheme being launched by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Arbed, which means "save" in Welsh, will see 6,000 homes being upgraded by March 2011.

The first phase of scheme will involve an average of £2.5 million being spent every month this year to retrofit exterior wall insulation, solar panels and heat pumps across regeneration areas.

When combined with the Assembly Government's Home Energy Efficiency Scheme and Boiler Scrappage Scheme, this will mean that a total of 25,000 Welsh homes will be made cheaper to heat in 2010-11.

"Wales is leading the way in the UK with this innovative scheme that focuses on energy efficiency," said environment minister Jane Davidson.

Barratt Homes recently revealed that its new homes are up to 40 per cent more energy efficient than they were ten years ago thanks to the likes of cheap double glazing and loft insulation.
