Introduction

If you are thinking of installing solar panels you can either do it yourself of choose an accredited solar installation company. Solar panels are readily available from major DIY chain stores. Unless you live in a listed building, an area of outstanding natural beauty or your home has an ‘A’ Frame planning permission is not required to install solar panels.

As already outlined there are different types of solar panels, depending upon the primary use, so if you plan to install them yourself make sure you are fully aware of their functionality and limitations before connecting to a hot water system. Not all panels are the same quality either, so make sure they meet EU and UK standards before purchase.

Alternatively you could ask for a quote from at least three professional solar panel installers. However, don’t always go for the cheapest quote, but consider the overall package i.e. quality of the panels to be installed, amount of deposit required, whether the company is an accredited solar panel installer and so on.

Solar panels work in the UK

You may be concerned about the British weather and even though the UK is in a temperate climate zone it still receives 60% of the solar energy received at the equator. It doesn’t have to be gloriously sunny for solar panels to work as they also operate on cold cloudy days.

In the UK, an efficient solar heating system can generate between 50 and 75% of all the electricity required over the year, which not only represents a significant saving on utility bills, but also a major reduction in the household’s carbon footprint.
